Auberge in Val-David, staying above the pub this fall

Where to stay in Val-David once the leaves turn? Our answer stays the same. Seven rooms with private bathrooms, right above the pub, on Le P'tit Train du Nord. You have dinner downstairs, you go up to bed, and the next morning the trail is at your door.

Fall in Val-David has nothing to do with July, and that's exactly why we love it. Fewer people on the trail, more quiet in the dining room, and colours on the mountains around the village that are worth the trip on their own. It's the season for people who come to walk, ride, or just sit near the building, not for people chasing a crowd.

The pub downstairs, the room upstairs

MacTaverne is a British-style pub in the former home of Le Baril Roulant, with an auberge upstairs. The idea doesn't change with the seasons. You come in, you have dinner, and when getting back in the car sounds like a bad idea, you go up. Seven rooms, no more, each with a private bathroom. Five queen rooms, one family room with a queen and a single bed, one room with two single beds.

In winter it's even truer. It gets dark early, it's cold outside, and the last thing anyone wants after a good meal is to drive home. Here, you just climb the stairs.

Right on the trail, close to Mont-Tremblant

We sit directly on Le P'tit Train du Nord, right across from the Rivière du Nord, in Val-David. Mont-Tremblant is about 30 minutes away by car, which makes the auberge a practical base for a ski weekend without sleeping on the mountain itself. You have breakfast here in the morning, head out to ski, and come back in the evening to a table that's waiting for you, not an anonymous hotel room.

Breakfast is included, served 8:00 to 10:00. Check-in is from 16:00, check-out at 11:00. Dogs are welcome in one designated room, with advance notice and a $60 cleaning fee.

A season to breathe

The quiet season has its own charm. The village slows down, tables are easier to come by, and the candle on the table matters even more once it's snowing outside. Our fall and winter hours hold steady: Monday and Tuesday 17:00 to 21:00, Friday 17:00 to 22:00, Saturday noon to 22:00, Sunday noon to 21:00. Closed Wednesday and Thursday from September 9 on, except December 30 and 31, when we're open for New Year's.

Is the auberge open year round? Yes. We host travellers all year, including fall and winter, on adjusted off-season hours.

Can I book the room without booking a table at the pub? Yes, the room and the table are booked separately. That said, almost everyone ends up having dinner downstairs the first night anyway.
